Happy accidents... It's June. Perennial borders are unfolding their magnificence and your plantings are coming to fruition. Those carefully laid plans are being realized in spades. BUT what's this? That veronica looks smashing with the (self-seeded...I didn't put them there...) digitalis. Rosa 'Buffalo Gal' is incredible with Linum perenne (didn't plan that one, but wow does it look good). Don't pull that weed yet...it adds needed texture to the combination of perennials it's inserted itself into. Ah..."the best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley." These are "happy accidents." Happy accidents are part of the serendipity that occurs in the garden. Sometimes we intend things, sometimes we don't. Don't let the lack of intention prevent you from enjoying a combination that works. NO ONE KNOWS YOU DIDN'T PLAN IT THAT WAY. Today's tip: take credit for those happy accidents. Revel in your chaos. Exuberantly embrace entropy. Everyone will quietly assume that the areas that DON'T work so well were just, well, mistakes. So don't let them in on your little secret...or, if you're feeling pretty confident about the overall state of your garden, you can do one of those, "Oh, I just threw all those things together and...." Sometimes the things that happen on their own are the best of all. CARPE HORTUS! Return to BotanicalGardening.com home... |
