RHS Plant Finder turns 20!
Anyone concerned about the proper names for their plants owes it to themselves to buy this book. I treat it like another magazine subscription and order the new version every year. The Plant Finder is used around the world by botanical gardens, nurseries, and plant lovers to insure accuracy and consistency in plant names. It's the easiest way to keep up on the shifting name game and will make your label preparation, databasing and writing more accurate. Veronica spicata 'Red Fox'? It's Veronica spicata 'Rotfuchs'--maybe not as mellifluous to an English speaker, but the correct name for a cultivar originating in Germany. Similar examples abound...and improper names ARE included with references to the correct one. With over 70,000 carefully vetted names, the Plant Finder is the authority of first resort for horticultural nomenclature. The anniversary issue includes over 4000 new plants and is the largest edition to date at nearly 1000 pages. The Plant Finder is also available for free online at www.rhs.org.uk and an extensive list of names removed from prior additions (because the plants are no longer available at UK nurseries) is also found there and is valuable for names you might not find in the current volume. Despite its electronic availability, there's nothing like having it in your hands--taking it where you will (and you will cart it around and refer to it constantly). It's cost is a reasonable L14.99 and shipping another L6 or so. That translates to roughly $26.00US to have this commendable reference delivered to your door. While the "plant finding" notations and nursery information are of limited use to people outside the UK, the book is worth it's weight in saffron just for the names.
